Art Quotes

"Making your unknown known is the important thing, and keeping the unknown always beyond you." {O'keeffe).

"He who possesses art and science has religion; he who does not possess them, needs religion."- Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von (1749-1832)

"You just become a flute, a hollow bamboo, and the universe sings through you. Your only credit is that you don't create any hindrance, you simply allow the universe to flow through you. Your being in a let-go . . . the objective art is created". (OSHO)

"It is all very well to copy what you see, but it is better to draw what you see in your mind. Then your memory and imagination are freed from the tyranny imposed by nature". (E. Degas)

"Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed."- Kahlil Gibran, A Handful of Sand on the Shore

"Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible."- PAUL KLEE, The Inward Vision

"Art feeds the soul, and art sales feed the Artist". (Spielman).

Art notes

My thanks to those who have commissioned my art for their homes. These commissioned works are tailored to the individual requests.

These paintings are not meant to convey any particular social agenda, no deep emotional content. The viewer will need to find their own meaning. They are mostly about. . . Paint. They are about creating freshness in brushwork and color, and searching for compositional strength.

"The subject matter, whether it be the human figure or landscape, is the framework I hang my practice on."

The artistic path often seems to parallel other personal quests. Forks in the road and stones in the shoe occur. When the old ways don't fit anymore, but a new way is not yet clear, the honest thing to do is jettison and jump. The dark night of the soul, or the smudge of the sketchbook is likely to ensue. Thomas Jefferson said: "It is always better to have no ideas than false ones; to believe nothing, than to believe what is wrong." There comes a time to clear the rubble and re-build from the ground up, claiming as your own only what is authentically yours by personal experience or verifiable testing. Dawn always follows night, with no fervent belief required. (Yes, I am talking about myself.)
It was great to see some of our former models again at the Avenue Gallery Show - Cori, Rachel, Roxana, Sarah. Special thanks to Rivers Dysart - where ever you are. Much thanks to all models for their help and good company. Indelible impressions are your legacy!
I have been inspired by recent visits to other artist's web sites. After lurking in the art newsgroups and clicking through to some site invitations, my awareness of the range of expression in art has been heightened. There is something for everyone and no lack of creative ideas, or stale ones. Why was I attracted to some styles of art rather than others? Are our tastes the result of our exposure to variety, or the lack of it? Is it a matter of nature or nurture? Probably both.

Exposure to the new and strange is good. Art on the web is sometimes good and sometimes strange. Art is as wild and woolly as the various folks that make it, but not to worry. We all have more in common than than our ego's might like to admit. Familiarity may breed love, contempt, or indifference. We all just like what we like, and that is a starting point, but not a wise ending point.

Is it possible for a person to improve his taste? Sure! To recognize and prefer excellence in an art, one must have some knowledge of the art. Well made things have certain objective qualities which can be recognized by those who know what is involved in good or bad workmanship in any given field. Art is not exempt. We may have our subjective opinion, we all know what we like. To be objective concerning art, to speak of the art and not just of ourselves, requires more of us.

All of this angular, cubist-influenced direction began from one small art magazine photo of a painting, torn out in a Seattle coffeehouse years ago. (the "Morningside Cafe"?) The painting that fascinated me was "The Lotus Eaters", printed upside down, and mis-titled, as I later discovered. The correct title: "Oriental Synchromy in Blue Green". The artist: Stanton MacDonald Wright. I would love to find a copy of it since mine is long gone. This was a small window into a mysterious faceted world, a glimpse of freedom from the "tyranny imposed by nature" (See Degas quote)

"Words about art are perhaps the most foolish words of all". ( Substitute any other creative subject for the word "art" and this probably also applies ). The art should be enough. If it isn't, then maybe more silent practice is needed.
